I started Greenwell in 2005 with one truck, a push mower, and three yards on the same block in Hyde Park. My neighbors were my first clients. Two of them still hire us today.
Before that I spent five years at a commercial landscape outfit in Sarasota, learning the trade. Good training. The foreman over there — a guy named Tom — used to say, "You can't fake a yard. Either it looks right or it doesn't." That stuck with me. I've been running Greenwell that way ever since.
My wife Carol came on full-time in 2010 to run the office. My sister-in-law helps with billing. Luis Rivera joined us as a crew lead in 2013 and now runs all our install jobs. Sophie Banh joined in 2017 and is our senior designer. We're eleven people total.
We're deliberately small. Our maintenance roster is capped at 240 properties because past that, quality slips and we can't keep track of what's happening on every site. We'd rather turn work away than show up and half-ass a yard.
